Creative Tile Ideas for Shower Walls - Short Hills, NJ

Shower walls are frequently covered in a single neutral-hued type of tile. While this can be elegant and clean-looking, it causes the shower to fade into the background and is not creative. Going beyond a single shape, material and color can give your shower a personalized look and make it the focal point of your bathroom.

Mix It Up

Rather than choosing a single type, color, texture or shape, create a visual surprise by mixing together two or more contrasting kinds of tiles. For example, pair smooth translucent glass with textured opaque stone tile; or square, long rectangular and short rectangular ceramic tiles together in coordinating shades. Keep in mind that if you choose tiles of varying thicknesses, you will not have an even surface when the project is complete. You can use this to your advantage to create an interesting overall surface texture.

Modern Mosaic

A mosaic does not have to create an obvious picture in your shower. Use mosaic tiles to create an abstract image or a series of visually interesting shapes. In a shower, you can also use mosaic tiles to create a closeup or to show a small part of a larger image across the shower walls. You can use bright colors commonly found in mosaics or choose neutral colors that will allow you to redecorate frequently.

Frame It

Add a border along the top, bottom or center of your shower to create a simple line of visual interest, or use specialty border tiles to create a framed point of interest in your shower. Create a mosaic, or use decorative tile in the center of the frame to create a permanent picture on the shower wall.

Shades of Ombre

Instead of a single color, or several different ones, choose tiles in several shades of the same color and create an ombre, or graduated effect. You can do this vertically, with lighter tiles at the top and darker at the bottom, or horizontally, with colors shifting gradually from one wall to another.

Accent Wall

The entire shower does not have to be covered in the same tile on every wall. Create an accent wall by making one different from the others. This wall can have an intricate mosaic or decorative tile, or simply a different or brighter version of the tiles on the other walls. Choose a wall that is visible from outside of the shower to make it part of your bathroom decor, or one that is hidden inside the shower as a charming surprise to occupants and thus does not become part of the regular bathroom decor.
